Ethnological geographies

Today, there are vibrant schools of anthropology on every continent, with rich anthropological traditions in Latin America and Russia and more recent developments in China and India, to mention a few.

A ‘Western’ bias does, however, mark the early period of anthropology, with the first anthropological schools (or traditions) linked to scholarly development in the USA, Great Britain, France and Germany. The diverse trajectories of anthropology have been marked by their particular national settings, that is by particular intellectual contexts and their unique social and political environments. Modern anthropology, as it emerged in the early 20th century, is usually associated with four key scholars who worked in three of the countries mentioned above. This was Franz Boas, working in the USA, AR Radclife-Brown and Bronislaw Malinowski in the UK, and Marcel Mauss in France.
